Spring has sprung, and if you’re anything like us, you’ll need a good spring cleaning to welcome in the warm weather. During the winter, the house starts to get cluttered—especially the closet. Spring is a great time to clean out your closet and let go of the things you don’t need anymore.

Follow this 5-step guide to get your closet clean for spring in only one day so that you can start tackling the other areas of your house!

  1. Do it in Small Chunks

The best way to purge a closet is to address it in segmented sections. A little can go along way when you want to clean a closet, and you’ll actually be more effective if you do it in parts. Begin by season, if its winter, go through your winter stuff first and start deciding what to keep and not keep. A great way to decide to keep something is by using the Marie Kondo method, which you can read here

Another great tip is to keep a goodwill bag in a closet where your family members can add to as they decide something doesn’t fit, or they no longer want it.

  1. Keep a “Maybe Bag”

If you are having a tough time deciding on some pieces, put them in a different bag, choose a blue recycling bag so that it is a different colour. Next winter, open up this bag last and go through the bag to decide if you still want it or not. Often having 4-6 months of not seeing the item will give you a fresh take on it.

  1. If it Doesn’t Fit, It Doesn’t Fit

If you are still holding on to a pair of jeans you had in your twenties, the chances are you probably won’t fit in them again if you haven’t since—and you shouldn’t feel bad about it. Give these jeans to goodwill so that someone else can enjoy them. In all honesty, they just make you feel worst every time you see them and realize they still don’t fit. Be realistic with your clothing and giveaway items that other people can enjoy.

  1. Plus 1, Minus 1 Method

Whenever you buy something new, you should give something away in that category. For example, if you buy a great new blouse, give away a blouse; that way, you’re only keeping what you are going to wear.

  1. Donate, donate, donate!

Everything in your closet that you no longer want can be a treasure to someone else. Make sure you donate your clothes instead of throwing them away.
