The fall is here! Have you prepped your home for the cold weather that is approaching? If not, the best time is now, when the weather is still nice.
Here are 10 things you can do now to prep your home for this coming winter!
1. Fix Your Exterior
It’s super important to repair your driveway and sidewalk cracks once a year to keep your house maintained. This will cause you less stress and limited bills when it comes time to sell your house.
While you are outside, you should also clean your gutters. This is also something you should do annually. If you can’t do it yourself, hire a local contractor!
While you are up there, you should also check your roof and chimney. Inspect your roof to see if there are any damaged shingles, flashing or vents. For your chimney, you want to check and see if there is any missing mortar if so, repair it by tuck-pointing.
2. Turn Off Outdoor Plumbing
You want to ensure your outdoor faucets are drained before freezing occurs. This can happen when it’s still mild out as the late evening and early mornings get quite cold. You also want to do this to your sprinkler systems and any other exterior water systems!
3. Clean Outdoor Furniture and Gardening Tools
Take the time to clean or power wash your outdoor furniture and tools, even if it is not quite time to put them away. It is important to clean these after a long summer season so you can keep them looking new and preserve their life!
4. Start Composting
Invest in some compost bins if you don’t compost already. Most major municipalities will also provide these free of charge! You want to collect the falling leaves and start composting them as they are gardening gold for next summer!
5. Plant Bulbs for Spring-Blooming Flowers
As soon as the soil has cooled down (usually around October) you want to plant some bulbs. By waiting, these beauties will be healthy and happy by next spring. If you’ve never planted bulbs before, select a spot in your yard that gets full sun during the day.
6. Prepare Your Furnace
This is another thing you should do annually, and it’s actually something you should do in the spring. However, most people don’t prep their furnace, so now is a good time to do so. We recommend getting your furnace professionally serviced if you haven’t had it prepped in a few seasons. This allows a seamless and stress-free heated home during the cold season.
If you can’t afford a service, we recommend you visually inspect your furnace and replace the furnace filter before you start using it on a daily basis.
7. Turn On Those Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans aren’t just for use in the summertime — they’re also useful in winter! During the warmer month, fans can be used for cooling a downdraft. Set your fans to rotate counterclockwise. The opposite during the winter. Reverse the rotation. Your blades now spin clockwise to distribute warm air back down.
8. Clean the Fireplace and Chimney
The exterior has been checked, but now it’s time for you to clean the inside. You want to give your chimney a nice clean, while also inspecting the flue. While doing this, you also want to ensure the doors and shields are sound.
We recommend having your chimney professionally swept if you use it during the winter. It’s also time for you to stock up on firewood!
9. Check Your Windows & Doors
Make sure you are keeping the hot air inside and the cold air outside! Before the cold weather comes, take the time to check your weather stripping. You can do this by opening a door and placing a piece of paper in the entryway and closing the door. The paper should not slide back and forth easily. If it does, the weather stripping isn’t doing its job.
Also, now’s the time to re-caulk around windows and door casings, if needed.
10. Light Up Your Home
Amp up the wattage and/or find ways to bring more light into your home for the winter. This will help the mood, ambiance, and your mental health for the colder, darker months.
You can also accentuate natural light by cleaning your windows and blinds, especially in rooms that get a lot of sunlight!
